Detroit ACE has issued an open call for a sculptor to create the next “Outside the Ring” statue honoring Joe Louis’s legacy beyond boxing. 

This new work will celebrate Louis’s groundbreaking impact on equestrian sports and his efforts to expand access for African Americans. Artists interested must submit a full application packet by December 30, 2025 to [email protected].

Required submission materials include:

• Name, address, and phone number

• Description of community engagement experience

• Examples of past statue work, including the locations of previous pieces (even if no longer installed)

• Two references from previous sculpture clients

• An Artist Statement explaining why the artist should be selected, listing required materials and the foundry that will be used, and including a résumé and answers to:

  • What interests you about this project?

  • What is your experience working on complex projects and meeting deadlines?

  • How would your project benefit the community?

For this commission, the the sculpture must include a horse. A selection committee of community members, artists, business owners, and members of the Louis family will review all submissions.
