Shakespeare in Detroit Brings Bold Dark Comedy Jane Anger to the Stage for Michigan Premiere
Limited-run production plays October 16–19, 2025, at the Boll Family YMCA in downtown Detroit
Detroit’s own Shakespeare in Detroit (SiD) is set to debut the Michigan premiere of Jane Anger, a razor-sharp dark comedy by playwright Talene Monahon, running for a limited engagement October 16–19, 2025. The production, directed by SiD’s founder and internationally acclaimed artist Sam White, will be staged at the Marlene Boll Theatre inside the Boll Family YMCA in downtown Detroit.
Set amid the plague of 1606, Jane Anger is a fast-paced, irreverent farce that reimagines a forgotten female writer who dares to confront none other than William Shakespeare himself. The result is a hilarious and chaotic clash of wit, ego, and survival — a story that playfully questions who gets remembered in history, and why.
“Jane Anger gives voice to those who’ve worked behind the scenes, often unacknowledged, to inspire culture, lead movements, and shape their communities,” said Sam White, Founding Artistic and Executive Director of Shakespeare in Detroit. “It’s a powerful, comedic reminder of the brilliance we often overlook but deeply rely on.”
The limited-run production includes five performances only:
Thursday, October 16 at 7:30 p.m.
Friday, October 17 at 7:30 p.m.
Saturday, October 18 at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
Sunday, October 19 at 3 p.m.
Tickets are $45 and available at shakespeareendetroit.com. Due to strong language, gore, and adult themes, the show is recommended for audiences 17 and older.
This Actors’ Equity Association production is made possible through the generous support of the Gilbert Family Foundation.
